Swim and Dive teams receive little support compared to other athletics

The student swim & dive section is non-existent. For the past three months, my sport has been neglected. Students have been at football games, volleyball games, cross country meets and soccer games. There have been continual shout-outs to each of these sports. Except mine.

Constantly I am trying to get my team the recognition we deserve. Each athlete works hard to get qualifying times or scores to accomplish their goals. It is discouraging when we can’t get anyone to show up or give us a shout out.

On Nov. 2, the swim & dive team left early for districts. That same day Run Kano posted a message on social media wishing the soccer team good luck at districts. Swim and Dive got nothing. The recognition was never there.

There is continual effort just to be heard by our school. We advertise about our swim meets just to hear excuses about no one showing up. Constantly I hear “we had no idea you had a swim meet. I didn’t see a post about it.”

On the school website in the athletics group you will find the category that says fall sports. There you will find the Kamiakin swim and dive team. If you click on the title you will discover in red a title that says ‘Kamiakin Swim & Dive Schedules, Scores and Game Locations.’

Each swim meet, we are ignored and forgotten.  Some people don’t even know we exist. Last year we won districts, but we never got a single congratulations. This year we got second place at districts losing first place only by one point. Again, there was no recognition on a job well done. On the swim team, each second counts, but it felt like each second we swam this season didn’t matter to anyone but the swim team.

On the dive team our divers practice hard to do dangerous dives, and with one slip up the result could be a new injury. They constantly are working hard to make their dives even better working on the little things like posture to get a better score. They contribute a lot to our wins as well earning top scores. This year one of our divers broke a school record, but her name was never announced. It’s as if only the team was proud.

On Nov. 16, the school had a sendoff for the girls’ soccer team making it official that every sport that made it to state received a send-off, except for the swim and dive team.

Last year we tried so hard to encourage students to show up but were unsuccessful. No one seems to know about the athletes who practice from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. every single day.

Swimming isn’t as easy as it looks. You could win every race but without a qualifying time for districts, you are not allowed to continue.

My teammates and I are very proud to represent Kamiakin and do our best to make the name ‘Brave’ mean something. All we ask is for a little support and acknowledgement for our hard work.
